What Should Your Essay Topics Be?If you were asked to write a history essay, would you choose to reflect the wrong history? As an English teacher, I am often asked what I recommend in essay topics.History is one of the most important subjects for us as educators. We cannot talk about something that is not recorded or researched - it's hard to explain the past to anyone that doesn't know it first hand.So what do students need to hear in history classes? First, they need to learn about history, then they need to use the subject in their writing. Our students need to be able to voice their opinions in our class, and not just rely on the teacher to come up with a list of uncontroversial truths.So if we want our students to be able to voice their opinions and to understand the past in a factual manner, we have to be very specific about the history they're studying. Are they going to be looking at an actual account of history, or are they going to be examining fake or staged historical dra mas? Is it going to be a biographical account or is it going to be a story based solely on the viewpoints of those who were there?To make sure that students understand the historical data in their history essay topics, they must be able to see firsthand the events that transpired in the time period they are studying. It's much easier to learn about events in the past if you can hear about them, or even better, experience them.Finally, it's important that students become skilled at using a new concept. What is the difference between the 'present' and the 'past'? It's easier to use the term 'present' when referring to events that happened in the present, but once you're entering the past, you need to be more specific about which events you're referring to.The best way to find the differences between the present and the past is to find examples from historical works. Next, ask yourself: what did I think was different between these two examples?Students are becoming increasingly reliant on text books and online resources to learn about the past. If you want to make sure that your students learn the material effectively, it's important that you keep your focus on the right history essay topics for them.
